Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company
constructed the Bankhead Tunnel beneath the Mobile River, connecting the city of
Mobile
to
Baldwin County
. The project was funded by the
New Deal-era
-era Works Projects Administration and named in honor of U.S. Senator
U.S. Senator John Hollis Bankhead II
