The Index was a newspaper founded by Henry Hotze (1834-1887) in 1862 to spread Confederate propaganda in Europe during the American Civil War. Hotze stopped publishing the journal in August 1865, four months after the war ended, and retired to less visible work as a publicist in London and Paris.
