Mildred and Claude Pepper

Claude Denson Pepper (1900-1989), an Alabama native, was a progressive U.S. senator representing Florida who championed social issues such as health care, education, and labor. He and Alabama senator Lister Hill helped guide the Hill-Burton Act of 1946 through Congress. Mildred Pepper worked on Claude's campaigns and headed political and charity organizations.
