Sack of Athens Video

In what some scholars contend was a turning point in Union treatment of southerners during the Civil War, Col. John B. Turchin led federal troops into Athens to reclaim the city after being repulsed by Confederate forces. Once the city was secured, Turchin turned a blind eye as his troops pillaged the town and assaulted some residents.
