The Azalea Trail was a cornerstone of Mobile's tourism industry from the 1930s to the 1950s, founded by South Carolina businessman Sam Lackland. The trail's popularity declined during the late twentieth century, but springtime events still complement the azaleas' blooming, including a 10-kilometer run and appearances by the Azalea Maids.
