Sock Factory in Fort Payne

Fort Payne, the DeKalb County seat, was the self-proclaimed “sock capital of the world” for its thriving textile industry. The city was a leading producer of hosiery for most of twentieth century, but overseas competition caused numerous plant closures between 2000 and 2010. Since that time, efforts have been underway to revive the industry.
