J. Marion Sims

Dr. James Marion Sims experimented on enslaved women in Alabama in the 1830s and 1840s. His findings and innovations in the field of gynecology gained him fame in medical circles, and in 1852 he became head surgeon at the Women's Hospital of the State of New York. When the Civil War broke out, Sims relocated to Paris and treated several members of European Royalty.
