Yazoo Land Fraud Territories

This map shows the various disputed territories involved with the Yazoo Land Fraud of 1795, masterminded by surveyor and speculator Zachariah Cox. The land fraud was perpetrated with the aid of prominent Georgia politicians, including Gov. Edward Telfair, who wished to divest themselves of expensive territories to the west that the state acquired in the aftermath of the American Revolution. As the map indicates, much of that land was located in what was at the time the Alabama Territory. Cox eventually ended up in continued legal troubles and penniless by his death in 1838.
