Lester B. Sullivan, 1967

Montgomery Commissioner of Public Safety Lester B. Sullivan speaks with police during a civil rights demonstration in June 1967. Sullivan was notably the plaintiff in the 1964 U.S. Supreme Court case New York Times vs. Sullivan in which he sued the organization and four civil rights leaders for libel for an advertisement they placed in the paper decrying violence against civil rights demonstrators by public safety officials throughout the South.
