Creola

Creola is located north of Mobile in Mobile County in southwest Alabama. It has a mayor/council form of government.

History

River Delta Marina and Campground Creola was named for the first settler in the area, who was Creole, a person of mixed European and African ancestry. The town of Creola shows up intermittently on some maps from the 1870s and on a rail line, such as the Mobile and Alabama Grand Trunk line. A post office was established in the locale in 1885. Creola was incorporated on February 14, 1978.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Creola recorded a population of 2,119. Of that number, 86.3 percent reported itself as white, 9.4 percent as African American, 1.7 percent as American Indian, and 1.5 percent as two or more races. The median household income was $52,679 and the per capita income was $22,970.

  • Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and extraction (1.6 percent)
  • Wholesale trade (1.6 percent)
  • Information (0.6 percent)

Education

Public education in Creola is overseen by the Mobile County Public Schools.

Transportation

Creola is essentially bisected by Interstate 65 and is also accessed by U.S. Highway 43 and State Highway 13 that run north-south. The Norfolk Southern Corporation operates a rail line that lies on the western boundary of Creola. Within city limits, the Mark Reynolds/North Mobile Airport is a public general aviation facility.

Events and Places of Interest

Creola Station, also known as Brue Church, (ca. 1905) is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Just outside Creola is the River Delta Marina and Campground. It is a public use facility operated by the Mobile County Commission that provides a variety camping facilities and access to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta.
