Cherokee County artist Myrtice S. West sits in the hallway of her home amidst a large number of her paintings. In front of her is a version of Woman of the Moon Giving Birth to Christ (Rev. 12: 1-4).
Myrtice West Gallery
Faced with family tragedy and hardship, Cherokee County native Myrtice S. West (1923-2010) turned to painting apocalyptic scenes from the Bible as a source of relief and escape. In addition to her widely praised series of paintings based on the “Book of Revelation,” she painted other religious scenes, portraits of people she knew, secular subjects, and decorative scenes on birdhouse gourds. Raised in poverty, West could not have imagined that her paintings now command tens of thousands of dollars.
