Birmingham native Carl Lewis entered the University of Houston in 1979 and competed on the school's track team. He was world-ranked in the long jump by the end of his freshman year and made the U.S. Olympic team while still a student. He was unable to compete because the United States boycotted the 1980 Summer Games in the USSR.
