Loraine Bedsole Tunstall

Loraine Bedsole Tunstall (1879-1953) was a social reformer in Alabama during the Progressive era. At the urging of the Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs, she became the first director of the newly established Alabama Department of Child Welfare (now the Department of Human Resources) in 1919. She was the first woman to head a state agency in Alabama.
