Alexander H. Curtis

Alexander H. Curtis (1829-1878) was a Republican politician during Reconstruction. He represented Perry County in the 1867 Constitutional Convention and served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1870-72 and the Alabama Senate from 1874-78. Curtis was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, as an enslaved person on the plantation of E. Haywood, who brought him to Alabama in 1839. He purchased his freedom in 1859, after raising money working as a barber and other occupations in Marion and continued to work as a barber after Emancipation.
