Starnes, Dies, and Matthews

Alabama congressman Joe Starnes (1895-1962) photographed with Texas representative Martin Dies Jr. (center) and educator and political activist J. B. Matthews (right). The men were leaders in congressional efforts to expose supposed Communists in the United States prior to and during World War II. Starnes was defeated in his 1944 reelection bid and enlisted in the U.S. Army, also having served during World War I.
