Alabama governor and Shelby County native Robert Bentley (1943- ) earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and practiced medicine in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa before entering state politics in 2002. He won the governor’s race in 2010 in a historic political sea change that also saw Republicans control of both bodies of the state legislature.
