Paul Hubbert

Walker County native (1935-2014) Paul Hubbert led the powerful Alabama Education Association interest group from 1969 until stepping down in 2011 for health reasons. During his tenure, he oversaw the merging of the Alabama State Teachers Association, an African American teachers’ organization, with the AEA and its rise as a political force in the state. Hubbert also co-chaired the Alabama Democratic Party and was a strong voice in state politics for the party and its interests. He lost a closely contested race for governor against Republican Guy Hunt in 1990 and also in the 1994 Democratic Primary to Jim Folsom Jr.
