Asa Carter, 1957

Asa Carter (1925-1979) walks through the halls of Birmingham City Hall after being charged in the shooting of two fellow members of his Ku Klux Klan group. Carter, a native of Oxford, Calhoun County, was a white supremacist noted for penning Gov. George C. Wallace's infamous 1963 inaugural speech, which included the line "Segregation now! Segregation tomorrow! Segregation forever!" Under the pseudonym Bedford Forrest Carter, he also wrote The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Education of Little Tree, which he claimed as autobiographical but was later exposed as a hoax.
