Charles Evans Hughes

Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) was the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1930-41) when it reviewed the Patterson v. Alabama case challenging the all-white jury makeup in the trial of Scottsboro defendant Haywood Patterson. The Court sent the case back to the Alabama Supreme Court in 1935 with an expectation that the court would reverse its verdict, which did not happen. Hughes previously had served as governor of New York and U.S. Secretary of State, and campaigned for president in 1916.
