John M. Harlan II

John Marshall Harlan II (1899-1971) was a highly influential justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1955 to 1971 whose decisions and opinions aided the cause of the civil rights movement. In relation to Alabama history, he is best known for writing the unanimous opinion in favor of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in the landmark 1958 case NAACP v. Alabama affirming freedom of association.
