Young Longleaf Pine

Young longleaf pine seedlings go through an initial “grass stage,” so called for the resemblance to a clump of grass, during their early years of growth. During this period, they are highly resistant to fire but become more vulnerable as they begin to grow trunks. The extensive root system they develop during the grass stage allows them to rise quickly in height and become more fire resistant.
