Marion Female Seminary

Marion Female Seminary was founded in Marion, Perry County, in 1836 and operated until 1908, being most notable for having artist Nicola Marschall as a member of the faculty. He is popularly credited with designing the first Confederate uniform and flag, "The Stars and Bars." It served as the Perry County High School from 1917 to 1963; the original third floor was removed in a remodel in 1930. The Greek Revival building is currently the headquarters of the Perry County Historical Association and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
