Inventor Fones McCarthy filed this patent extension request in 1854, altering his original 1840 patent drawing to reflect the changes he had made on his cotton gin. His addition of Figure 5, the large cross-section view of the roller and the two blades, clarified and dramatized the operation of his gin, which were produced in Demopolis, Marengo County, among other places.
