Providence

Chickasaw State Park Providence is located in central Marengo County in the southwestern part of the state. It has a mayor/city council form of government.

History

Providence was incorporated in the 1970s.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Providence recorded a population of 121. Of that number, 81.8 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 17.4 percent as African American, 0.8 percent as Hispanic or Latino, and 0.8 percent as two or more races. The town’s median household income was $56,250, and the per capita income was $30,550.

According to 2020 Census estimates, the workforce in Providence was divided among the following industrial categories:

  • Manufacturing (45.2 percent)
  • Educational services and health care and social assistance (16.7 percent)
  • Retail trade (16.7 percent)
  • Professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services (11.9 percent)
  • Public administration (4.8 percent)
  • Other services, except public administration (2.4 percent)
  • Transportation and warehousing, and utilities (2.4 percent)

Education

Students in Providence attend Marengo County schools; no public schools are located within the town limits.

Transportation

U.S. Highway 43/State Highway 69 bisects Providence running northeast-southwest. County Highway 44 runs east from town, where it intersects 43.

Events and Places of Interest

Chickasaw State Park, located on the northern and western town limits of Providence, has camping, picnic, and playground facilities on its 520 acres.
