Coker

Coker is located in central Tuscaloosa County in the west-central part of the state. It has a mayor/city council form of government.

History

Coker was incorporated in 1999.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Coker recorded a population of 1,043. Of that number, 88.8 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 10.5 percent as two or more races, and 0.8 percent as African American. The town’s median household income was $59,265, and the per capita income was $26,324.

According to 2020 Census estimates, the workforce in Coker was divided among the following industrial categories:

  • Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and extraction (2.0 percent)
  • Professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services (1.5 percent)
  • Finance and insurance, and real estate and rental and leasing (0.9 percent)
  • Information (0.4 percent)

Education

Schools in Coker are part of the Tuscaloosa County school system; the town has one elementary school. The University of Alabama, Stillman College, and Shelton State Community College are located in nearby Tuscaloosa.

Transportation

U.S. Highway 82/State Highway 6 bisects Coker running northeast-southwest. The Tuscaloosa Regional Airport is located just to the southeast. The Alabama Southern Railway operates a rail line through Coker.

Events and Places of Interest

Coker holds an annual County Fair and Festival in May. Lake Lurleen State Park is located about five miles north of Coker and offers boating, camping, and fishing activities The Big Creek Cemetery and Church Site (ca. 1833) near Coker is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
