Gordonville

Gordonville is located in Alabama’s Black Belt region in western Lowndes County in the south-central part of the state. It has a mayor/city council form of government.

History

Gordonville General Store The town of Gordonville is spelled in varying sources as Gordonville and Gordonsville. The name listed by the U.S. Census, however, is Gordonville. The town is named after the Gordon brothers. Three of the five brothers—Samuel, Francis, and David—were awarded land for their services in the Creek War of 1813-14. The brothers settled there in the late 1820s and early 1830s and helped develop the community with homes and churches. The town incorporated in January 1990 and remains primarily a rural town.

Demographics

According to 2016 Census estimates, Gordonville recorded a population of 326. Of that number, 98.8 percent of respondents identified themselves as African American and 1.2 percent as white. The town’s median household income was $18,798, and the per capita income was $18,565.

  • Construction (1.5 percent)

Education

Students in Gordonville attend Lowndes County schools; no public schools are located within the town limits.

Transportation

County Highway 17/12 runs through town going east-west, but exits town going southeast. Beechwood Airport is located about a mile south of town.

Events and Places of Interest

The Crosby Water System (ca. 1955) is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
