Moody

The city of Moody is located in St. Clair County in the northeastern portion of the state to the northeast of the city of Birmingham. It has a mayor/council form of government.

History

Moody City Hall The first home in what is now Moody was constructed in 1820 by Epps Moody, who had moved there from North Carolina and for whom the town is named. Other North Carolina acquaintances of Moody’s soon followed him to Alabama. The town originally was called Moody’s Crossroads because it grew up along two roads that intersected there.

During the Civil War, most Moody residents were pro-Union as none of them owned any enslaved people, and several of the men were drafted into the Confederate Army against their will. At least one deserted and served in the U.S. Army. After the war, the town grew quickly with the addition of a gristmill and several stores. The first school was constructed in Moody in 1879, with about 50 students. Moody was officially incorporated in 1962. The city has grown considerably in recent years as people who work in Birmingham have moved there.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Moody recorded a population of 13,004. Of that number, 67.5 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 26.6 percent as African American, 4.4 percent as Hispanic, 2.4 percent as two or more races, 1.4 percent as Asian, and 0.5 percent as Native American. The town’s median household income was $52,035, and the per capita income was $28,934.

Education

Moody schools are part of the St. Clair County School System. The town has one elementary school, one middle school, one junior high school, and one high school. The town also supports one private academy.

Transportation

Moody is bisected by U.S. Highway 411, which runs northeast-southwest through the town and connects with Interstate 20 to the south.

Events and Places of Interest

Moody Municipal Park Moody maintains a number of parks and recreational venues for its citizens, including eleven athletic fields, a walking track, tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, two pavilions, and a special field for disabled children and adults. The city holds an annual Oktoberfest the last Saturday in October that features food vendors, live entertainment, a costume contest, and arts and crafts vendors.
