Chickasaw State Park

Chickasaw State Park is located in rural Marengo County south of Demopolis. The park’s 520-acres include a wading pool, hiking trails, pavilions, and picnic areas. There is also a small campground with three RV sites and three tent sites, although Chickasaw is primarily a day-use park. As late as the 1930s, the tract of land contained one of the few remaining tracts of virgin pine forest in Alabama.

Chickasaw State Park In 1935, development of the state park began on land that had been owned by the state of Alabama since 1819. In 1935, the federal government established a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp in the park for the purpose of constructing the facilities. The CCC built 2.6 miles of roads with bridges and culverts, a bathhouse, a shelter, a picnic area, and 3.2 miles of hiking trails with foot bridges all of which are still part of the current park facilities. The CCC also planted thousands of pine and hardwood tree seedlings. Work was completed on the park facilities in 1936. A sign in the park commemorates the work of the CCC.

Chickasaw State Park’s current facilities include picnic tables and grills located throughout the park. Four group pavilions also are available for rent, one of which has a large built-in BBQ pit. The park’s modern campground has three campsites with water and electrical hookups as well as primitive camping areas. Restrooms are available, but there are no shower facilities. The park is located next to the Turnipseed-Ikenberry Place Physically Disabled Hunting Area, a handicapped-accessible, state-operated hunting facility.
