Bullard House

Congressman James Ferguson Dowdell constructed this house in Oak Bowery, Chambers County, in 1850, and it was later owned by his son, James Render Dowdell. He served as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court from 1909 to 1914. It was also the boyhood home of Robert Lee Bullard, who became a general in the U.S. Army and would lead the First Infantry Division in France during World War I. It is pictured here in March 1933, when it was photographed by the Historical American Buildings Survey and occupied by several of Bullard's siblings. Located on present-day County Road 290, it is in a fine state of preservation.
