John Benton Callis (1828-1898) was a businessman who was raised in Wisconsin. During the Civil War, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, he settled in Huntsville, Madison County, and was elected as a Republican to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served one term and then returned to Wisconsin, where he bought and sold real estate.
