Charles Tyree

Charles Tyree was a member of the 14th United States Colored Troops, which helped defend the U.S. position in Decatur, Morgan County, from Confederate attack in the Battle of Decatur from October 26-29, 1864, during the Civil War. Born into slavery in Tennessee in 1845, Tyree enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 1, 1863, was wounded at Decatur, and was promoted to sergeant in 1865, after the war’s end. He lived and worked in in Indianapolis from 1875 until his death in 1923.
