Southern pearly-eye butterflies (Enodia portlandia Fabricius), upper two, and two forms of the common wood nymph (Cercyonis pegala Fabricius) sitting on a coral bean stalk (Erythrina herbacea Linnaeus), painted by naturalist and artist Philip Henry Gosse in 1838 for his Entomologia Alabamensis, an unpublished collection of drawings and sketches of animals and plants, including 48 insects from Alabama.
