Enslaved Family Hearth

This 1935 photograph by Alex Bush depicts the fireplace in the home of an enslaved family’s house, and later tenant farmer house, on the Forks of Cypress Plantation property in Lauderdale County. The building was one of a complex of structures on the plantation built by Irish immigrant James Jackson in 1830. It was photographed as part of the Library of Congress’s Historic American Buildings Survey of the 1930s.
