National African-American Archives and Multicultural Museum

The National African-American Archives and Multicultural Museum is located in Mobile, Mobile County. The building was constructed in 1931 by the Mobile Public Library as a branch for the city’s African American residents and later used to store government records. In 1992, it was opened as the National African-American Archives and Museum and houses documents, photographs, artifacts, artwork, and other materials related to African American life and history in the United States. Exhibits focus on slavery, Africatown, sports, and Mobile’s Mardi Gras tradition, among other things. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
