Birmingham-born Paul Hemphill (1936-2009) was a novelist and journalist on a wide range of topics, best known for his memoir Leaving Birmingham, published in 1993. A graduate of Auburn University, he worked for newspapers and magazines including the Birmingham News and the Atlanta Journal before publishing his first book—a history of country music—in 1970.
