Benjamin Fitzpatrick Bridge and Thurlow Dam

This photograph (ca. 1950s) shows Thurlow Dam and the Benjamin Fitzpatrick Bridge on the Tallapoosa River in Tallassee, Elmore County. The 1,738-foot-long bridge, which was dedicated in December 1940, is one of the longest curved bridges in the country. It is named for Alabama's eleventh governor, Benjamin Fitzpatrick. Thurlow Dam was built by the Alabama Power Company in 1931 and named for Oscar G. Thurlow, a chief engineer and vice president of the company.
