James Bevel
Civil rights leader Rev. James L. Bevel (1936-2008) was a founder of the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference
who called on African Americans to
march
from Selma to Montgomery following the death of
Jimmie Lee Jackson
in February 1965. Bevel also was central to the
Birmingham Campaign of 1963
and the Chicago Open Housing Movement in 1966.
