Montgomery librarian Juliette Hampton Morgan began protesting the racist treatment of African Americans on public buses during the late 1940s. Her letters to the editor of the Montgomery Advertiser warned Montgomery's white residents that impending changes to the racial status quo were inevitable and brought her death threats and ostracism.
