The mayfly is a type of flying insect with numerous species belonging to the Order Ephemeroptera. The name of this order of derives from the word "ephemeral," which means "lasting only a day" in ancient Greek. They are so called because the adults live only long enough to reproduce and do not even possess mouthparts.
