Construction of the Bankhead Tunnel

In 1941, the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company constructed the Bankhead Tunnel beneath the Mobile River, connecting the city of Mobile to Baldwin County. The project was funded by the New Deal-era-era Works Projects Administration and named in honor of U.S. Senator U.S. Senator John Hollis Bankhead II.
