Salt Works

Archaeologist Ashley Dumas looks over a salt spring at the upper salt works near Jackson, Clarke County, in 2007. Salt was mined at the site as early as the early nineteenth century, and before that Native Americans extracted salt from the area. During the Civil War, salt from the springs was shipped throughout the South.
