David G. Farragut

David G. Farragut (1801-1870), shown here aboard the last ship he commanded, the USS Franklin. During the American Civil War, Farragut was a United States Navy commander who led his fleet against Confederate forces in the capture of New Orleans in 1862 and Mobile Bay in 1864, during which he was reported to have made his famous exclamation "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
