Elyton Village Public Housing

The Elyton Village public housing community was created in 1938 to house low-income residents of Birmingham, Jefferson County. Operated by the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District, it was established on a portion of the Earle-Green plantation, which at the time was located in the old county seat of Elyton, now a Birmingham neighborhood. The community is notable because famed country music star Tammy Wynette lived there from 1964 to 1966, the period when she first gained notoriety on local television.
