Lester

Lester is located in northwestern Limestone County in the extreme north-central part of the state on the Alabama/Tennessee state line. It has a mayor/city council form of government.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Lester recorded a population of 131. Of that total, 90.8 percent of the population identified themselves as white, 5.3 percent as two or more races, 3.1 percent as African American, and 0.8 percent as Asian. The town’s median household income was $43,750, and the per capita income was $17,546.

According to 2020 Census estimates, the workforce in Lester was divided among the following industrial categories:

  • Educational services and health care and social assistance (23.1 percent)
  • Retail trade (7.7 percent)
  • Transportation and warehousing, and utilities (7.7 percent)
  • Arts, entertainment, and recreation, and accommodation and food services (5.1 percent)
  • Construction (5.1 percent)
  • Other services, except public administration (5.1 percent)
  • Professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services (5.1 percent)
  • Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and extraction (2.6 percent)

Education

Part of the Limestone County school system, West Limestone High School is the only school located in Lester.

Transportation

County Highway 17 bisects Lester running roughly north-south.

Events and Places of Interest

Wheeler Lake and Joe Wheeler State Park are located about 10 miles south of Lester. The town has gained some attention for its Halloween-themed haunted house in the supposedly haunted local D. E. Jackson Memorial Hospital, which opened in the 1940s and closed in the 1990s.
